Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Famous for the massive crater – the area is part of the volcanic mountain highlands of northern Tanzania. The crater is a “caldera” created by a volcano exploding and leaving a massive crater. The rim of the crater is lush, cool and dewy, mountain forest, and accommodation is in this lovely cool area.

Visits to the crater follow a specific procedure, carefully controlled by the park authorities. Climbing down the steep crater walls in the early morning, to the grasslands, home to plentiful wildlife on the crater floor, and departing the crater by mid-afternoon. The uniqueness of this area has made it a favourite safari destination.
