Karisia Walking Safaris

Specialised in Walking Safaris, Karisia offers clients a unique opportunity to discover the most pristine regions of Kenya by foot, to explore Kenya’s magnificent wildlife up close and to get to know the rich culture of the Samburu warriors in an intimate and authentic environment.

Escaping the constraints of a vehicle means that guests can walk where no car will go. Guests will be led by professional guides, which are fluent in English, Swahili and Maa and who are very knowledgeable in natural history and local culture as well as in how to provide an adventure of a lifetime. Every safari is tailor made to suit different interests and every day is unique.

Karisia offers 3 basic types of walking safaris which only slightly differ in cost and level of luxury; a Luxury Walking Safari led by the owners Kerry Glen or James Christian, a Samburu Led Walking Safari or an Expedition Walking Safari. Karisia is also pioneering exhilarating mountain bike safaris for intrepid cyclists and adventurers alike.
Tumaren, a 3,000 acre conservation area in northern Kenya is the base for Karisia’s walking safaris. It has healthy numbers of game and predators, including gerenuk, impala, stein buck, Grevy’s zebra, elephant, lion, leopard and cheetah. Apart from that guests can also see the more shy or less common species such as aardwolves, wild dogs, lesser kudu, eland, hyena, bat-eared fox, reticulated giraffe and the endangered Lelwel’s hartebeest.

Walking with our guides, and the intimacy this encouraged, meant our knowledge of local tribal customs and habits was also constantly being furthered.

We found and hired Karisia through the Internet – we were rewarded with a fantastic first safari experience in Kenya. We rode camels, hiked with Masai warriors, saw many animals, and learned a tremendous amount about Kenya. We highly recommend Karisia!

This is a truly enchanting way to see a different side of Kenya and meet some of its wonderful people. Yes you need to be reasonably fit and not phased by a bit of discomfort and occasional adrenaline rushes – but I cannot recommend this strongly enough and can only thank Boniface and his team and Kerry Glenn who runs Karisia for making this magic accessible.
