Borana / Laragai House

Home to the Dyer family for over three generations, Borana is an exceptional ranch, rich in history and filled with extensive personal knowledge of this magical land.

Located 6,000 feet above sea level, the 8 elegant cottages are entirely secluded from each other and enjoy panoramic views over the Samangua Valley and the Lewa plains to the Ngare Ndare forest and the snow-tipped peaks of Mt Kenya beyond. Set in a beautiful garden of indigenous plants, each cottage encompasses an open fireplace and a private or shared veranda, while all areas of the lodge overlook a lake, which is a popular watering hole for many local animals. Borana has a main dining and sitting room as well as a stunning infinity pool.

Laragai House is Borana’s discreet and private residence 8km away from the main lodge, which can only be booked on exclusive basis, accommodating up to 16 guests in 8 bedrooms. It offers outstanding comfort and luxury in a secluded setting. Its unique design, combining locally made furniture with luxurious carpets and chic fabrics, is often referred to as ‘African Baronial’. The house features a heated swimming pool, a pool house, bar and Wi-Fi Internet access throughout as well as satellite television and a state-of-the-art sound system with an extensive DVD and CD library.

Visitors to Borana can enjoy magnificent views of Mount Kenya and horseback safaris with an easy conscience. This exclusive retreat’s eight luxurious cottages are furnished with huge open fireplaces and scenic verandas, and located on a 13,000-hectare working cattle ranch that underwent a conversion to wildlife conservation and ecotourism in the early 1990s.

Staying at Borana is wonderful for the beauty, the variety and the high concentration of animals, but adding to the experience is the fact that a stay will benefit the local community both indirectly and directly.

Borana is a fantastic lodge in a wonderful location but what makes it special are the people – the owners, the guides, the grooms, the lodge staff – all are focussed on making your stay as interesting and enjoyable as possible.

This has been a most wonderful experience on safari in my three visits. I will certainly be back to ride those horses. I will recommend Borana to anyone I know coming to Kenya. Your special attention to detail and comfort was impeccable.
