Arusha & Kilimanjaro
Arusha is a small town in the lush coffee growing highlands of northern Tanzania, close to the Kenya border. It is the safari hub of the northern circuit – Tarangire, Manyara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti. Many safaris start here, either connecting from Kenya, or international arrival from Kilimanjaro International Airport. There are a few small boutique lodges in the town.
Kilimanjaro is one of the most accessible high summits. But there is so much more to Kili than her Summit. The ascent of the slopes is a virtual climate tour, from the tropics to the Arctic. Even before you cross the national park boundary (at the 2700m Contour), the cultivated foot slopes give way to lush montane forest, inhabited by elusive Elephants, Leopards, Buffalo and endangered Abbot’s Duiker, and other small antelopes and primates.
Above 4000m, a surreal Alpine dessert supports little life other than a few hardy mosses and lichen. Then, finally, the last vestigial vegetation gives way to a winter wonderland of ice and snow -‐ and the magnificent beauty of the roof of the continent.
